A 60-day cruise through Australia is being halted days after the tragic passing of an older female passenger who was stranded by the ship on a distant island.

The elderly woman had been trekking on Lizard Island with shipmates from the Coral Adventurer, but separated from the excursion for a break. The liner left without her and returned later that day after the personnel realised the woman was not present.

An extensive hunt discovered her person the following day.

Authorities are looking into the tragedy, together with police and the medical examiner.

The CEO of the cruise operator said that passengers and crew on the vessel were notified that the continuation of the voyage had been cancelled due to the "sad loss and prior technical problems".

Via official communication, he further stated that guests would be given a complete reimbursement, and said the operator was working "to arrange the homeward trips of the passengers via specially arranged planes".

Authorities also issued an updated announcement, and said they had "issued a directive to the Commander" preventing any new passengers from boarding the vessel.

The official said that they would visit the ship in the Australian city upon its arrival.

Chronology of Incidents

The ship originally sailed from Cairns on 24 October, and was only 48 hours into the voyage at the point of the senior passenger's demise. The tropical location was the initial destination on the voyage.

Travelers on the vessel - who generally pay substantial amounts of currency to participate in the voyage - were transported there for a daily excursion with the option of hiking or snorkelling.

Family Statement

The offspring of the deceased woman said that her family was "surprised and saddened that the vessel left the location after an planned outing without my parent".

Through her comments, she characterized her mother as an "vigorous 80-year-old" who was a member of a bushwalking club.

"From the little information we have been informed, it seems that there was a failure of care and basic judgment," she said.

She continued that she hoped the investigation would be able to pinpoint what "the company should have undertaken that might have saved Mother's existence".

"Based on information from the investigators that it was a very hot period, and mother became unwell on the hill climb," she revealed.

"They requested her to return, without accompaniment. Then the vessel left, apparently without doing a roll call.

"At some stage in that chain of events, or soon after, she died, by herself."

Company Position

Through an announcement, the Chief Executive affirmed that the company was "cooperating fully with officials to aid their inquiry".

He said that the company was "very regretful that this has occurred" and had provided its total backing to the loved ones.

Cruise Industry Procedures

The vessel accommodates up to one hundred twenty travelers with forty-six personnel, according to corporate information. It was purpose-built to access distant areas of the nation's coastline and is equipped with "tenders" - compact vessels used to take travelers on shore trips.

Events of this nature are rare, and passenger vessels have systems to track which passengers are getting on or disembarking, according to industry experts.

"Leaving covertly or [back] aboard simply isn't an choice," one expert stated.

Vessel operators take these methods extremely carefully and have "advanced technology in place to avoid such incidents from occurring," the authority added.

"This is presumably a surprising - and sad - one-off."
